A Mother’s Guide to the Perfect Day Trip at Brevard Zoo

Planning a family day trip can be both exciting and daunting, especially when you have young children in tow. As a mother who has experienced the joy of exploring Brevard Zoo with my kids, I’m here to share our adventure and offer some tips to ensure your visit is smooth, fun, and memorable.

The drive for me from Orlando was roughly an hour but I always like to give myself time because Florida traffic is crazy!

Brevard Zoo, located in Melbourne, Florida, is a fantastic destination that offers something for everyone in the family.

Getting Ready for the Day

Preparation is key when planning a day at Brevard Zoo. I recommend packing a bag with essentials such as sunscreen, hats, reusable water bottles, and snacks. Comfortable shoes are a must, as the zoo is spread out over 75 acres with a variety of habitats and attractions. If you have younger children, consider bringing a stroller or renting one at the zoo.

Arriving at Brevard Zoo

We arrived early to avoid the mid-morning rush. The parking is ample and free, which is a big plus. Upon entering the zoo, we were greeted by friendly staff who provided us with a map and a schedule of the day’s events. The zoo’s layout is family-friendly and easy to navigate, with clear paths and signs guiding us to different exhibits.

Exploring the Animal Exhibits

Brevard Zoo is home to over 900 animals from around the world, and each exhibit offers a unique experience. My kids were particularly fascinated by the Expedition Africa exhibit, where we encountered giraffes, rhinos, and zebras. The highlight was the giraffe feeding station, where my children had the chance to feed these gentle giants. The joy on their faces was priceless!

The Rainforest Revealed exhibit was another favorite. Walking through the lush greenery and spotting colorful birds and playful monkeys was like stepping into another world. We also enjoyed the Australian Walkabout, where we got up close with kangaroos and wallabies. That was a pretty wild experience as they just chilled while we walked thru.

Interactive Experiences

Brevard Zoo offers numerous interactive experiences that are both educational and entertaining. We took a ride on the Cape to Cairo Express, a train that takes you through various habitats, offering a unique perspective of the animals and their environments. The Paws On section was a hit with my kids. This interactive play area features a petting zoo, splash pad, and educational exhibits that engage children in learning about animals and conservation. Perfect to cool off on a hot day, just be prepared with extra clothes or swim stuff! Remember to re apply that sunscreen after too!

For lunch, they have the Zoofari Café, which offers a variety of kid-friendly meals and healthy options. There are also plenty of picnic areas if you prefer to bring your own food.

Prep for a great visit..

  1. Arrive Early: This helps you beat the crowds and see the animals when they are most active.
  2. Stay Hydrated: Bring water bottles and refill them at the hydration stations around the zoo.
  3. Use Sun Protection: Florida sun can be intense, so apply sunscreen regularly and wear hats.
  4. Plan Your Route: Use the zoo map to plan your visit, ensuring you don’t miss any key exhibits.
  5. Engage in Activities: Participate in the scheduled feedings, talks, and interactive experiences to enhance your visit.

We left the zoo tired but happy, with plenty of stories to share and memories to cherish.

A day trip to Brevard Zoo is a perfect family outing that combines fun and education. The diverse exhibits, interactive experiences, and family-friendly amenities make it a destination that both parents and children will love. If you’re looking for a day full of adventure and discovery, Brevard Zoo is the place to be.

Whether you’re a local or just visiting Florida’s Space Coast, I highly recommend planning a trip to Brevard Zoo. Your family will thank you for it, and the memories you create will last a lifetime.
